RIPS | Real-time Incident Preparedness Simulator

The SimGroup at the Center for the Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT) was contracted by the National Bioterrorism Civilian Medical Response Center (CiMeRC) and the Center of Excellence for Remote and Medically Under-Served Areas (CERMUSA) to assist in bringing cutting-edge simulation technologies to the existing CiMeRC Biodefense Education Forum (Forum). This Forum was created to support CiMeRCs mission to promote the development of an effective response by the civilian medical community to the earliest stages of a conventional or biological incident or attack by providing advanced web-based and traditional technologies to effectively educate, train and coordinate efforts between medical responders, hospitals, local, state, and federal agencies. One such solution which CiMeRC has successfully provided are the Strategies for Incident Preparedness: A National Model (SIP) that consists of the 20 worst-case problem exercise scenarios. Each scenario has been created by CiMeRC for health care organizations to prepare for mass casualty events, both natural and terrorist-initiated. In the current Forum, the 20 customizable scenarios can be tailored for any unique characteristics of distinct locales by altering specific names and words throughout the individual scenario.

The SIM Group planned to assist in the continued development of the CiMeRC Biodefense Education Forum. Specifically, one of the 20 scenarios from the Strategies for Incident Preparedness was selected to provide the content for the first Real-time Incident Preparedness Simulation (RIPS) scenario. It was also an important objective to maintain the integrity of the content already developed by CiMeRC as it has been validated as a powerful and effective training tool. The main purpose of this collaboration was to layer the advantages of real-time collaboration and augmented learning developed by the SIM Group on top of the extensive research in mass-casualty problem solving that CiMeRC had developed to create a more powerful and interactive tool for incident preparedness and training.
